In focus at Smart City Expo Miami’s fourth annual edition: Building sustainable communities

“This event is about innovation, innovation, innovation,” Bernardo Scheinkman, curator of Smart City Expo Miami, said of this edition of the global conference. Hosted at the Wolfson Campus Auditorium of Miami Dade College from September 18th to 20th, this year marks the fourth annual edition of the hybrid online/in-person Expo. Organizers expect around 5,000 participants and 50 speakers.
The focus of this year’s Expo is “building sustainable communities,” a nod to the key goals of the event: to serve as an innovation platform that promotes discussions and raises awareness about the importance of urban planning, climate action, and the green economy.
The conference itself will take place on September 18th and 19th. On the 20th, there will be an Artificial Intelligence Summit for mayors held at the Miami Dade College AI Lab. Scheinkman said that this is the first-ever of its kind.
“We are excited to welcome award-winning speakers from around the world to share their vision for the future of urban spaces,” Sheinkman told Refresh Miami. He continued, saying that having Miami as a backdrop for this event makes a lot of sense on two counts: “Miami is a truly global city that is both at the forefront of climate challenges and solutions.”
At its core, the Expo offers a unique platform for leading voices in the smart city movement to share their ideas with a diverse audience that includes everyone from top experts to local community members – and everyone in between. The Expo is divided into six innovation areas, ranging from sustainable growth to inclusive and sharing cities.
While the conference is global in scope, Miami is well represented in the Expo. The speaker line-up includes Raimundo Rodulfo, CIO of the City of Coral Gables; Biayna Bogosian, architect and professor of architectural technology at Florida International University; and Caroline Lewis, the founder and senior advisor to the CLEO Institute.
Other highlights of the conference include:
- Data Is The Secret Ingredient For Smart City Success, a keynote presentation from Silicon Valley-based futurist Jonathan Reichental.
- Wave Power as a Renewable Energy Source, an opportunity to learn about Tel Aviv startup Eco Wave Power from founder/CEO Inna Braverman.
- Reimagining the Urban Experience, a session led by architect and smart cities developer Paul Doherty in which participants will reimagine their own urban experiences and create new futures in a human-centric, data-driven world.
- Stockholm Woody City, a talk by Janica Wiklander, CEO of Henning Larsen Architects, about the world’s largest urban wooden construction project.
- Integrating Weather and Wellness into Urban Planning, presented by renowned meteorologist and author Bonnie Schneider
Scheinkman emphasized that this event isn’t just focused on talking about smart cities, but actually acting on these ideas. “All participants will come together to make a plan for creating more sustainable communities.”
